My eldest daughter, Nitya, has been at the receiving end of some absolutely revolting stuff about her complexion. At the playground in our building and at school.
And this one is for the parents.
One of these days, I will walk up to your door, ring your doorbell and proceed to give you a piece of my mind! You’ll deserve every bit you get!
How dare you! How dare you subject any child to your sick obsession with color? How dare you create a vocabulary where color is used in a demeaning way? Maybe, I should say this to your parents. Or theirs.
Oh yes, this is an angry mothers rant.
I know that we are supposed to teach our children to ignore such comments. ‘Sticks and stones’, we’re supposed to tell them. Well, not anymore! I am sick and tired of making my child 'stronger' or 'indifferent' to colored barbs. Fact is, they are thrown as insults and they hurt.
So I've had enough. I am not sweeping this under the carpet. I am coming to your house.
For the saner of you, of course I know she's gorgeous! So gorgeous that sometimes I get up in the night just to look at her. And she's gorgeous on the inside too.
Enough is enough. Nitya is a wonderful, beautiful human being and I’ve had it with those who try to make her feel less by bringing up something as nonsensical as colour. No more will I stand by and tolerate this and neither will she. We are going to fight this battle tooth and nail and come out winners.
Sameera, Mother
